Eric Guenette is an abstract artist that applies years of graphic design principles into his organic and subtly sophisticated artworks. Eric works mainly in latex, acrylic and spray paint. He also creates most of his structural and decorative framing from scratch. Most of the substrates used are cotton painter drop cloths, fiberboard, cardboard, as well as old unwanted paintings. The works feel modern and urban with dense layering and a loose organic juxtaposition of application techniques. He rarely paints with brushes, often using scraps of leftover framing wood or plastic scrapers created from household items like leftover butter or yogurt containers to apply the paint. The combination of sharp linear edges and random marks create this unique style. Much of the latex paint is mis-tinted box store house paint that has been returned to the store and resold as sad, unwanted liquid gold. Eric adopts these cans and repurposes the paint and gives it a new home, while injecting a bit of fate into the color wheel. The acrylic offers a textural separation from the latex and the spray paint keeps to the spirit of the graffiti artist, while Guenette is not one himself; appreciates the real world nature of graffiti artists trying to express themselves in a world that tries to contain art in various stodgy spaces, when art is meant for everyone to see. Why does Eric paint? What is the meaning of his art? Why has he been painting for 25 years? What is the genesis of his entire being and how does that apply to his art? If you are considering purchasing a piece of art from someone, you want to know the answers to some of these questions...(go to the education tab above)
