Fragmented memories Painting

The stillness of the Lot’s reflections belies the fact that their medium, the river is continually moving. However, reflections (like clouds) are also transitory, being subject to changes in the weather. Wind fragments the reflections into ripples, whilst heavy rainfall changes the river from a deep green mirror to an opaque ochre flow as the rich red clays of Marcillac seep into the Lot from the Dourdou. In the days after summer storms the current gradually slows down and the river correspondingly changes from rouge de Venis to terre de Siene before finally returning to the intense vertes de cadmiums et pythalos seen in so many of the paintings.
