ABOUT THE ARTWORK

My abstract paintings are almost always named for something I gained in self knowledge or self growth during their creation. I worked on this painting almost to completion in the company of other artists. That was unusual for me when working on abstract, and it brought about a feeling of vulnerability that I don't feel so much when I am painting a realism painting. Abstract work, for me, is so completely dependent on what will express through me. I never know what it will be, and I cannot reliably invoke it. When I realized that feeling of vulnerability, I decided to go with it, feel it, and be free to finish the painting even in its intimidating presence. The painting is full of movement and has bold value contrasts between pure, strong colors and pastels as well as black and white. The focal shapes are unblended into their surroundings and background areas are blended almost to suggest infinite depth. The canvas is stretched on a wooden frame and it is fitted with a hanging wire. The edges are painted with the mood and colors of the face of the painting. The acrylic painting is finished with Gamvar. It is signed.

I am a Texas artist and have painted for most of my 71 years, being from a family of artists. My mother's youngest sister, aunt Patsy, spent a lot of time with me, guiding and encouraging me, and I credit her for my passion for art. She painted under the name of "von." When she died in August of 2018, I began placing "von" somewhere on the face of each painting as an acknowledgment of her role in my artistic endeavors. My inspirations come from my home environment in Texas. Things that I have taken for granted all my life are now frequent subjects for art. Mesquites, cactus, old barns and shacks, windmills, wooden fence posts, wildflowers and the like are favorite subjects. I am a colorist, and I enjoy using color to give new life to otherwise fading beauty. In addition to color, I strive for dimension, movement, depth and unusual perspective.
