Acrylic on burnt canvas. 16’ x 20’ Fuego is a collection of pieces created by the artist Andrea Pérez as a retrospective of her experience as a trimmer in California. The artist implemented actual fire in her creation to remark the astonishing smokey landscapes that surround the cannabis farms. The wildfires of the year 2020 was as catastrophic as the year itself. Andrea Pérez is a Mexican artist based in Miami, Florida. She is a graduate from Miami International University of Art & Design, her burgeon as an artist came after her desire of escaping the chaos of 2020 going to the deep mountains in California. Seeing the shocking atmosphere; smokey and astonishing, inspired her to transform it into art. It was a tragically beautiful view, a catharsis of calm created by a natural disaster. The strains of fuego (zookie, purple punch, and ice cream) were selected by the artist after her four months of working and learning about the cannabis plant. The long mentally tiering work of trimming became a perspective game of impersonating cannabis buds as actual characters. The stems always gave the impression of small waving hands. Fuego is a composition of her vision and experience of California, an incredible amount of fires and weed. With bold and uneven strokes of greens, purple, yellow, and orange captured the characteristics of the different strains; and the burned edges create a feeling of disaster. A chaotic background represented by flames surrounding the optimism of the cannabis buds. The whole piece is a paradox of life and chaos; the beautiful tragedy of nature.
