Fugazi de Stijl Painting

"It was late when Juice and I walked into The Five Spot. After three o'clock for sure, but the place was still jumping. David Amram was jamming away on some kind of a sweet sounding horn with two old guys he had brought back with him from Cuba, one on guitar and one on congas. Between songs we went over to talk to Dave and he introduced us to his new friends. They only spoke a bit of English but were both extremely fluent in Latin jazz. Across the smoke filled room Mondrian, de Kooning, and Ginsberg were arguing about politics as usual. Pollock was with a woman I'd never seen before. As usual. Rothko had evidently stormed out hours ago over some perceived disrespect from a critic. Not unusual. Everybody was drunk. We pulled up two seats next to Mondrian, ordered some cheap red wine, and went about picking our sides in the debate..." The above story is, of course, completely fugazi. That scene was waaay before my time, but oh what a time it must have been! I'm an American, but my family tree is half Dutch, half Scottish, and half Irish so I'd like to believe I could have held my own with that crowd. This piece has been created with a nod to the de stijl school and in particular to Mondrian and presents as a "picture in a picture". It features a wooden frame attached to the canvas to focus the eye, but also has an engaging painterly quality to the touch of gray background wall.
