ABOUT THE ARTWORK

"It was late when Juice and I walked into The Five Spot. After three o'clock for sure, but the place was still jumping. David Amram was jamming away on some kind of a sweet sounding horn with two old guys he had brought back with him from Cuba, one on guitar and one on congas. Between songs we went over to talk to Dave and he introduced us to his new friends. They only spoke a bit of English but were both extremely fluent in Latin jazz. Across the smoke filled room Mondrian, de Kooning, and Ginsberg were arguing about politics as usual. Pollock was with a woman I'd never seen before. As usual. Rothko had evidently stormed out hours ago over some perceived disrespect from a critic. Not unusual. Everybody was drunk. We pulled up two seats next to Mondrian, ordered some cheap red wine, and went about picking our sides in the debate..." The above story is, of course, completely fugazi. That scene was waaay before my time, but oh what a time it must have been! I'm an American, but my family tree is half Dutch, half Scottish, and half Irish so I'd like to believe I could have held my own with that crowd. This piece has been created with a nod to the de stijl school and in particular to Mondrian and presents as a "picture in a picture". It features a wooden frame attached to the canvas to focus the eye, but also has an engaging painterly quality to the touch of gray background wall. This artwork will be happy on the wall of a home, office, or business establishment. Enjoy!

After a 30 year career in advertising and sales leadership I escaped the corporate media world a few years ago and can now focus on creating my own work. In other words, I'm an outsider artist that has decades of ideas pouring out. My intent is primarily to create pieces of art that are highly visual and interesting to enjoy and study... but may often express ideas, ask questions, unearth feelings, debate opinions, or sometimes be provocative. Like many paintings though, they're often just a combination of lines, shapes, colors, textures, and space. That said; I hope my work presents a UNIQUE combination of art elements to you and that you like what you see. Better yet, I hope you believe some of my pieces should be included in your collection. I've traveled the world but have always lived in the Philadelphia area. While I have no formal training as an artist, I've been a photographer and I've been around the art community my whole life. My wife Suzanne works as a Docent for the Barnes Foundation in Philadelphia, and together we've raised three wonderful sons that are all now making their own way in the world. We have a home and our studio in Chester County PA with our Bernese Mountain Dog; Mr Charlie.
