ABOUT THE ARTWORK
This is a tribute to courage and survival in the face of war, internment and persecution. It is a protest against fascism, inspired by a visit to the Czech Republic. 60 kilometres from the capital Prague, the old garrison of Theresienstadt was used by the Nazis as a prison for political prisoners. The main garrison gate has ominous white and black stripes around it. The garrison town was used as a prison for Jews. Many died there or were transported to Auschwitz.
