Art Description

Painting: Ink on Soft (Yarn, Cotton, Fabric), Other.

Gattacantha addresses our search for origins and belonging. A skeletal fish signifies our natural ancestry. The image below it balances two concepts used to distance ourselves from our humble natural heritage. A stream of code from the human genome (gattaca) signifies ‘science’ and our physical journey, structured in a pyramidal form to mimic imposed hierarchical categorization of nature with ‘us’ as the apex. Embedded in the coding is the second concept: hidden names of religions, demonstrating a spiritual search for origins. These ‘labels’ are not present in the actual coding, representing differences in explanations of self.
