I was inspired to paint this homage to American astronaut Gus Grissom after reading about his incredible firsts during the 1960s space missions with NASA. In this image, Grissom is preparing for Gemini III which was the first time two U.S. astronauts flew together in space. Grissom and John Young launched March 23, 1965 and flew three low-Earth orbits in their spacecraft "Molly Brown," named for the "Unsinkable Molly Brown" who survived the Titanic and whose Denver house is not far from the basement where I painted this image. The name is a reference to his Liberty Bell 7 Mercury capsule which sank after splashdown when Grissom flew alone as the second American in space back in 1961. Before becoming an astronaut, Grissom flew an F-86 Sabre in Korea, completing 100 missions in 1952. He was a life-long member of the Church of Christ and a Boy Scout (I had an excellent experience in the Boy Scouts in Portland, Oregon). Grissom died alongside Ed White and Roger Chaffee during a fire during an Apollo 1 preflight test on Feb. 21, 1967.
