Brutalist concrete buildings and textures of weathered building walls and facades is a source of inspiration in my work. My slightly obsessive compulsive streak disappears when I am in the studio experimenting with various materials, paint types, plaster, concrete. It is the combination of all these elements and their interaction when I mix them together that allow me to build layers upon layers onto canvas or board. I enjoy the sometimes surprising outcome and even the frustrations which usually push me to explore new ideas and mix new materials. The addition and then removal of some elements create eroded and fragmentary compositions. This very organic and spontaneous process-oriented way of working allows me to evolved and make every painting unique and add another dimension to the brush strokes or knife applications. I am currently working on a series of paintings that have a sense of geometry, which is triggered by my fascination with architecture.

I would describe my most recent work as a hybrid between photographic images, painting and collage. My creative apprenticeship was as a photographer and filmmaker. After studying film at the Emerson College in Boston Massachusetts, I became a professional photographer with an emphasis on fashion and beauty photography. Through personal photographic work I developed an appreciation of perspective, form and also a love of textures, which i could find in raw concrete forms of brutalist architecture or urban landscapes. I started painting for personal projects. My technique has evolved through experimentation with the ways in which paint and other media can be used to create textures and layers which refer to each other both laterally on the canvas but also three dimensionally through processes of building up layers and also scraping material away. Whether I am looking at another artist’s work or something I encounter day to day in a City street, I am aware of the interaction between layers of material as they both build up and then fall away either on purpose of through decay and destruction. This is a dimension that I am trying to create through my own work. Works which move me have layers and textures and patinas which belie their history. Layers that can no longer be seen directly leave a relief which affects everything which comes after.
