28” x 42” x 2.75”, Oil on Birch Panel with a Douglas Fir Cradled Frame George Nakashima’s Armchair (In the hot seat) George Nakashima was a celebrated architect, craftsman and furniture designer. A Japanese American, Nakashima and his family were forced into an Interment Camp in Idaho during WWII. While there, he made furniture from whatever pieces of wood he could find and learned techniques of Japanese woodworking from others stationed at the camp. In 1943, upon petition from a fellow architect, he was released. By 1945, Nakashima opened his furniture and woodworking studio that is still in business today. His designs elevate what others may see as imperfections and highlight the natural cracks and burls within wood. This armchair was designed and built by Nakashima in 1946. This painting is my nod to the artists that have persevered through adversity to create under pressure and fire.
