Sabrina Brouwers is an Italian/German geometric abstract artist based in London. Sabrina graduated from Falmouth University in 2019 with a Bachelors in Fine Art and holds a Post- graduate Diploma in Graphic Design at the University of Art London, in Chelsea. Her work continues to be displayed widely in public exhibitions, and previous shows include The Royal Academy Summer Exhibition (2022) and at The Royal Exchange (2022). This painting brings together some of the key principles within the Gestalt theory, which explores the psychological effects of visual perception. By using solely a monochrome colour palette, I am stripping away any conversation between colour and shape allowing a deeper exploration of composition and technique. The offset of the painted composition, revealing an asymmetrical edge of raw canvas, creates a sense of discomfort, highlighting a psychological response to the asymmetric composition. The asymmetrical boarder of raw canvas reveals imperfections from the base grid of the painting, and is also used to build a colour swatch palette that is referenced within the dominant composition. The raw canvas boarder is a direct reference from print design technique, where crop marks, composition bleed and colour swatches are highlighted.

Sabrina Brouwers is a truly international artist - half-German, half-Italian, and now living and working in South London. Working mainly with abstract paintings in acrylic, her style has been strongly influenced by her nomadic upbringing and her fascination with design principles. Her paintings are largely monochrome and feature geometric shapes that repeat over a grid system, all plotted with a mathematical precision. She states that the unnaturally rigid grid is a mirror to our urban landscapes, while circles are introduced to juxtapose with and challenge this sense of order. Sabrina has an interesting background, having grown up between different countries before studying a bachelors in fine art at Falmouth University in 2019. She has since developed her style of geometric abstract painting, studying a postgraduate diploma in graphic design at the University of Art in London. Sabrina now works as both an artist and a graphic designer, and the influence of these two differing disciplines is clear to see throughout her paintings.
