Gestural Composition #1 Painting

Acrylic on primed canvas (W:23.6in x H:35.4in x D:1.3in) In producing this artwork, I wanted to explore many established abstract constructs including colour, and its surface qualities, as well as the materiality of the paint itself, line and expressive gestural mark making, as well as composition and tension between the painted elements on the canvas, and how they sit in relation to each other. The white square on the canvas acted almost as an ‘on surface palette’, and the resulting brushwork and shape was a result of mixing and loading the brushes with the paint to use on the rest of the canvas. I think in doing this the qualities of this area are truly abstract and thoughtless, contrasted with the rest of the canvas in which is purposeful in its mark making. I like to work in an expressive, bold and instinctive way, often leaving to chance. The sides are painted in white, and the back is titled, signed, and dated (year only), and will be supplied with a certificate of authenticity. The painting will be shipped on its stretcher bars and will be ready to hang out of the box. This painting is NOT varnished. The painting is NOT framed.
