About The Artwork

Putting titles on paintings is a funny business. I painted this as part of a series of work that seemed to lead from one piece to another. Like passing a ball, the next piece just flowed naturally. In the end I decided to limit the series to 4 pieces because I think I was getting bored. This is my favourite of that series. Sometimes you don’t know where inspiration comes from. I remember a great Irish artist from my home town called Patrick Graham opened an exhibition I was involved in a few years ago. He said, “don’t ask an artist what their work is about, ask them what inspires them, what influences them if you want to truly understand the work.” I guess I’m paraphrasing as it was a long time ago, but that always stayed with me. My work is mine because of my influences, my taste and my, in some cases, limitations, but the title of this work is inspired by the great Romanian footballer Gheorghe Hagi. God knows (or does he/she?!) what he would think of this, but he was an artist with a football so I hope he would approve.

Andy Mac Manus is an Irish artist working and living in London for almost 15 years. Although he initially studied fine art in Galway, he went on to study interior design, multimedia and finally graduated with a master’s degree in graphic design from the London College of Communication in 2011. Over the years Andy has exhibited extensively across Ireland, in the UK and as far afield as Shanghai. After taking quite a long hiatus from making work while concentrating on design, like many others, the pandemic gave him a fortuitous opportunity to slow down and take stock, and he rediscovered his passion for making art. When a brief landed on his desk that required some packaging design, this gave him the opportunity to flesh out the sketches he had already been developing, and this ongoing collaboration led to the creation of several small canvases. This project was the genesis of the work he creates today. While his work over the years has incorporated everything from paint, photography, screen printing, spray paint, film, and sculptural installations, he now works predominately with acrylic paint on canvas. Andy comes to art from a graphic design background, and the intersection of these two very different worlds continues to influence his work today. His vibrant, diverse, and daily creative practice takes in painting, graphic design and interior design.
