Women have been an iconic subject in male oriented art since the beginning of time, one could say. Male painters have sexualized women in their works, but Marcel Ozymantra tries to show more than that. These women have touched him, sometimes literal, but always in the mind, and the latter he’s trying to converse to the audience. Not only the physical is of importance, but also the mental. A woman is not just an object. Not to a woman herself and neither to the artist. It’s always personal, it’s always in relation to each other. Just like art isn’t only for the artist, but establishes a relation between the artist and the audience. To go beyond the appearance of an attractive person, to show more than just the surface, to show the ‘relation’, it is necessary for the artist to leave the superficial rendering of ‘reality’ behind and work with expressionist gestures. For every memory or observation another approach, all within the realm of beauty, to convey true feelings without using any words. Because this is how memory serves us. Certain moments in time, observations, get stuck within feelings. Experience makes a dark path in the mind, as if wandering through an unknown forest in which we recognize certain things that shape our lives. The content of the paintings can be autobiographical, anecdotal, philosophical or historical, but every new painting asks for a different approach. What seems the best way to the artist to visualize what is in his mind? The only limit here seems to be his own limitations as a painter. But isn’t art limitless? It seems that art is indeed limitless, but the individual artist isn’t. We are all defined by our limitations, whether it’s of what interests us or by our craftsmanship. Searching for those borders and where it brings the art, the artist and the audience together is what motivates Marcel Ozymantra.
