My ongoing series of portraits of the herd are inspired by thirty four years of raising bovines on a farm in Virginia. In this series I seek to capture the individual beauty, personality, and innocence of these pastoral creatures. Goldie is a beautiful Charolais cow raised on our farm in Virginia. She had many calves and always tended lovingly to each. Cows are wonderfully maternal and this portrait follows art historical tradition of capturing the relationship between a mother and child. I paint these intimate portraits slowly, building up many layers of oil paint until I feel I have captured the essence of the cow. My painting is 6" x 6" x 2" on panel and is ready to hang from a wire. This painting can also sit on a bookshelf as it is 2" deep.

Nancy has been a painter since childhood. Her first memory at age three is of making a crayon portrait of a pink poodle. For thirty-five years she and her husband raised cattle on their farm in central Virginia, nurturing a herd comprised of many breeds and diverse models for her painting. In her work, she explores the emotional depths of her subjects, bridging the boundary between the human and animal worlds.
