Goodbye Painting

When I traveled to Australia, I wanted to see the coral reefs, but the boat tour had to be extended from three days to five because the reefs closer to the shore were dead or dying. The friends with whom I was staying told me that even the five-day trip didn't offer views of the colors that used to be seen. As I only had limited time for my stay, I decided not to go on the tour. I was disappointed, though, and haunted by the quickening loss of these treasures, so when I got home, I created "Goodbye" from sea sponges, which I painted with bright colors and then covered with light blue, white, and gray so that the brightness of what once was would peek through in places. I had also cut holes in the canvas, made wells with aluminum foil, and applied gesso and oil paint to highlight the emptiness of where the former reefs had been.
