ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Though an examination of gesture and language - processes of concealment and erasure inform a sense of ambiguity and play within my work. The paintings are often a result of continued reworking and alteration, subsequently developing a palimpsestic, highly tactual quality. Spectral forms peek through the surface, evincing suggestions of the uncanny, while bold, vibrant marks tease at standardised notions of painterly bravado. Through the demarcation of visual and literary references, I aim to create linear, highly personal narratives that explore sentiments of yearning, expectation and self-hood. Symbolism is contextualised within the overt and indubitably overarching framework of art-historical narrative, and thus, the paintings operate analogously within an anatomy of subjects, signs and language.

Felix Carr (b.1993) is known for his fluid, large scale paintings that blend dreamlike figurative elements with gestural abstraction to explore contemporary portrayals of the body. Conflating painting and writing, the artist engages with the linear tradition of paint, while simultaneously exploring its limits and potentiality, particularly in relation to poetry and language. Addressing diverse reference points from the art-historical canon through to the popular imaginary, he seeks to create a rounded appraisal of the experiential and the sensory. The artist lives and works in London, having graduated with a First Class Honours from the Glasgow School of Art in 2016, when the artist was selected to exhibit in the Royal Scottish Academy as part of Scottish New Contemporaries. Since then, he has exhibited throughout the UK and Europe, with solo shows in London, Lille, and Düsseldorf, with works housed in international collections. He is the recipient of The Steven Campbell-Hunt medal, as well as the Stevenston Painting Prize (RSA).
