Hare-Brain was a finalist in Australia's prestigious National Works on paper prize in 2016. This work is acrylic, pencil, collage and stencil on archival paper. It has been professionally float-mounted in a slick square-edged white frame. Dimensions include frame. This work is was inspired by our contradictory treatment of animals. Rabbits are perceived as both cuddly companion animals but also as meat and fur “products”. Whilst we support an industry that raises millions of companion animals, we also trap, torture and kill billions of animals annually. My work seeks to expose such contradictions in the face of widespread, culturally ingrained acceptance of this schism. With all my works, I employ soft colours, collage and decorative elements that belie the sinister narrative content of the work – in the same way that the sordid underbelly of ‘legitimate’ mistreatment and exploitation of animals is repressed and sugarcoated.
