Artist Recognition

The artist, Daniela Kammerer, travelled through eight European villages and towns during the course of a single year. She opened up her mobile studio eight times to both residents and visitors, inviting them into conversation in order portray them. Her concern was not so much the outward appearance of those that visited her centre. Her objective was not to make a realistic reproduction of eye colour, mouth shape and ear size which could be better reproduced by photography. Her aim was no conventional portrait, but rather to capture a visual statement showing a different face of her subjects - their aura, family, origins, and perceived traces of self-expression. Researching, groping, and feeling, she approaches her subjects, presenting questions and assessing their answers to show the people and their inner and outer landscapes, to create portraits that go far beyond the everyday view, the familiar superficial surface, but into the nature and psyche of those portrayed. The perspective of the series is unusual, shockingly direct at times. She allows no distancing or half-profiles, but presents an unobstructed view into the face depicting knowledge, beliefs, hunches, and feelings - both visible and invisible. This is how she was able to process functions into her work that encompass a neurobiological frontal perspective. The stories told by each individual depicted determine the brush’s stroke, the emphatic choice of colour and the rare appearance of a dog, cat or fellow human are revealed in the background. The light and colours of the surrounding country play with the subjects. Only when the anatomy and physique, the charisma, the smile and the narrative are completely absorbed does the expressive abstraction become a portrait which goes beyond a snapshot of the moment into the life and land of the eight chosen locations. The pictures bear abbreviations in the title, which refer to the place of origin.
