ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Melissa Mason is a contemporary Abstract-Expressionist painter best known for her equine art. Many of her paintings are non-representational, but there is a reoccurring equine motif in the work. The devotion and familiarity of horses is an enduring constant in her life, so it seems only natural for her to use it to explore the painting process. The energy and freedom of the Abstract-Expressionists deeply influenced her and instilled a passion for the direction she choose in her art making. She compares line and color to musical notes and seeks to combine them to create harmonious, lyrical abstractions. The process involves pouring, brushing, and dripping paint to activate the surface, letting the colors merge into beautifully formed shapes and then responding to that surface to finish the composition. Her art has garnered many awards, is in the collection of the Florida Museum of Art in Deland FL, The Museum of Arts and Sciences in Daytona Beach Florida, along with multiple corporate and private collections. The work has also been published in Picturing Florida-from the 1st Coast to the Space Coast, a book featuring 38 Florida artists
