About The Artwork

Hengistbury Head in Dorset has inspired many of my paintings. It is a headland jutting out into the sea with 360 degree views, looking out to Bournemouth Bay, the Isle of Wight, Christchurch and Mudeford Harbour. Beach huts and upturned boats and surf boards are scattered along the spit and are a joy to paint. This painting was inspired by sketches taken on a winter's walk, when most of the huts were shuttered up. It conveys how bright and exciting a beach can be even on a winter's evening. I used a textured canvas to create the rippled effect and to break up the paint on the huts. This gives the painting vitality and prevents it looking photographic. The deep canvas does not need a frame; it looks fresh and modern without one, and is ready to hang, being fitted with D rings and hanging cord. I use finest quality acrylics and artists' varnish to protect the final painting from moisture and sunlight.

I cannot remember a time when I did not paint or draw. My work has evolved over the years, but since moving to the coast, I have drawn inspiration from my daily clifftop and beach walks. I love to paint boats, beach huts, and harbours in acrylics in an expressionist semi-abstract way. Having recently studied at the Classical Art Academy I have taken up oil painting of the same subject matter in a classical style. I am lucky to live within a few minutes of the New Forest, and its ancient trees, orange-tinged streams and unique light are also favourite subjects. I also enjoy portraiture using layers of oil and cold wax to create interesting images. My art is an expression of the joy I find in everyday scenes, in the colours and light of my local area.
