"Hesitation" Painting

James Norbury’s paintings capture the beauty of the imperfect, decaying world around us. After studying fine art, James completed a degree in Zoological Science but soon returned to a life of writing and painting. He finds enormous pleasure in the colours and textures of a piece of the decaying world - rusting metal, peeling wooden doors and wet concrete. “I don't look to reproduce these images, rather I want to capture the essence of the thing, the play of colours and textures and that indescribable essence which age brings to a surface.” His work is heavily influenced by Zen and he works in a state of empty mind, letting the picture tell him where to go, rather than forcing a particular image onto the canvas. “Although much of my art career has been based around traditional fine art and realism I have come to realise that it's only when I let the work flow naturally from me, that I truly love the things which emerge.” James works in a range of techniques which allow himself, nature and entropy to collaborate on the painting - this is the most harmonious way to do justice to the subject matter, which is usually made by man and then eroded by the weather, pollution and time.
