About The Artwork

This particular piece belongs to a series called Anima/ Animus, a concept set forth by Carl Jung regarding a way to understand how archetypes of the self develop both for men and women. Both of which are latin terms that he employs to describe the unconscious qualities within us. I am using this concept to understand the different sets of feminine and masculine energies or patterns within the self. We all have the complimentary femininity and masculinity. More so, the understanding that within each set of energy or patterns within the self, we can always find the corresponding opposite. Not too dissimilar to the eastern concept of Yin and Yang. In this painting, I wanted to embed the work with a literal "hiding", a thin veil for what laid inside my heart. Hard to read there is text written in graphite which is obscured by subtle layers of house paint that drip. I also used powder charcoal mixed with polyurethane, a mixture that is found within this entire series as it speaks to a process of burning and rebirth of a material. Conceptually I have been fascinated with how we hide aspects of our identities in plain sight.
