From the little wood on Gosmore Road, Hitchin, the land opens up. Tall trees hit me as old sailing ships on an ocean of rolling fields on a fine afternoon. You may want to frame this to meld the painting to its surroundings.

What inspires me is the quality of light and the feeling it conveys - and can I capture it, whether it is a conventional landscape, an impressionist subject, or an abstract...? A painting should have touch of audacity and a sense of authority too. I love the work of late medieval painters, and sometimes I try to create a sense of what they did, but in the context of a more modern subject and treatment. So often the chiaroscuro was dazzling, but it rarely showed the source of light which illuminated the picture. Today, I might paint a restaurant or bar, with its electric lights. Can I capture the quality of the electric lights, and make you screw up your eyes slightly at the brightness? Or capture afternoon sunshine in an abstract English landscape. Or, of course, a portrait. But I love the impressionists and early abstracts. I have waited for years until I had the time I wanted to do painting. And now I can work on a painting until it is as good as I can get it. I always use the best materials for supports, sealants, gesso, paints (Michael Harding) and brushes....I believe you cannot get real quality in your paintings unless everything is as good as it can be. Perhaps wrongly, I don't stick to a single subject or style, as many do. I enjoy new challenges. At the same time I try not to throw out the bathwater with the baby. I have paintings in private collections in USA (Naples FL, LA CA, New York). Also in El Fuerte in Mexico, Tarras in New Zealand and Toronto in Canada. Also several in town halls across northern France - as well as the Museum in Hitchin UK. I have recently completed a portrait for the NY Observers Astronomical Soc. My dream is to have a painting stolen from a prominent public place. Then you've really arrived. Leonardo had to wait some hundreds of years, so no hurry. There is a more or less a complete record of my paintings - just put 20paintings into Google and you will see my website, usually at the top of the list. OR go to
