I came to Hong Kong just before 1997 to live and witness the Handover of Hong Kong from the British back to China. Since then, I have witnessed and lived through the changes in the people and the place as they strove through the shifts and shocks of the past two decades. My thoughts, reflections, my emotions and my experiences are encapsulated and expressed in this series of portraits of Hong Kongers, captured and distilled in oil marked on canvas as they live/lived through the changes with quiet determination/silent despair. These are portraits of the everyday Hongkonger, individuals battered and buffeted by the socio-political winds as they try live on in the everyday. These portraits also foretell of the massive protests that rocked Hong Kong in 2019 and that forever changed the path its people would take. Perhaps these individuals were one of the two million that marched for their political freedoms? What of them now we may ask.

Hong Kong
Born in Canada and schooled in Singapore, Hong Kong and Canada, Brian has worked in the design profession for more than 20 years starting with freelance and agency work in Canada to starting his own award winning studio in Hong Kong. To date his studio has won more than 100 international design awards and has had work published in numerous design magazines and journals. Despite his chosen profession in design, Brian has keep one foot in the world of art and has continued with his explorations in painting in various media. His art informs his design practice and he has formed several art groups and participated in numerous exhibitions. His work draws from a multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary background; from the expressiveness of Chinese calligraphy to the chiarascuro of the Renaissance to the transcendance of the Abstract Expressionists; philosophically Brian is influenced by Daoism and a childhood schooling in the Sciences has led to an interest in String Theory. Brian ultimately has earned degrees in the Visual Arts, Economics and Design with a focus on Ecodesign and Design Ecologies. Aside from the Visual Arts, Brian also has a deep interest in Music. He is a self-taught 'musician' having written for and played with several bands. He has recorded several CDs and was offered a contract by a major record label. His interest in music has also led to involvement in projects in interactive and digital media and he has found many cross-influences between Music and the Visual Arts which are reflected in his work. (https://soundcloud.com/briantyst, w/ Henry Ho https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XRruofbVSkQ&t=105s) He has also a keen interest in the martial arts. His training and practice opens up avenues of understanding of body kinaesthetics which he incorporates into his art. The practice allows him to fully understand himself as Body and Mind and thus to fully appreciate himself as individual and as a part of Nature. It was at an early age that Brian developed a concern for Nature. Through his encounters with chipmunks in Canada and mudskippers in Singapore, Brian has built a sensitivity to the inequities imposed on Nature by Man, all this arousing in him a deeply felt need to do something to restore that balance between Man and Nature. Art and design is his given talent and thus his chosen path to seeking Eco-Enlightenment; to seeking redress and restoration of balance.
