About The Artwork
This is an interior painting of a popular coffee shop in the Northeast Minneapolis arts district. The light was streaming in this fall day, highlighting the different surfaces of this specially renovated industrial space, and the people inside. I'm drawn to the different light effects and reflections and the stories that the people and space tell together, particularly the mysterious hoodie man studying his post-it note and contemplating what he will write or study next. The numbers in the painting also show a system that coffee shops developed during the pandemic so that there could be sparsely populated seating inside, with time limits. Ultimately I think these will be curious historical markers in the future of a special time when we needed to take a number to have a seat in a coffee shop with an hour limit.
