About The Artwork

The theme of freedom was the inspiration for "Horses And Two Cellists" (2012). According to the artist, freedom is acquired not by will, but through rigour and... work. Freedom is full-time work! The painter as well as the musician or the dancer must bend to the rigour of his art to have control of his tool (and/or his body). It is only on this condition that the artist can be in total freedom. This is also true in life in general! The horses, symbol of freedom, are represented here by dots to be connected. It is suggested here to draw the lines, to make the effort, to obtain here the complete picture. The naked musicians are all concentrated on their favourite instruments. In "Horses And Two Cellists" there is a contrast between the representation of the musicians (realistic) and the drawing with dots to connect (naive). A finished image allied to another in the making. The vertical band on the right of the painting prefigures a colour palette used in the chromatic realisation of the work. Yes, freedom is acquired through hard work!

"Everything is important, everything is beautiful, everything is sad. Where do we start if we choose to tell life and make it a work of art? Michèle Mailhot My work is eclectic, both in its form and in the use of media. In general, I work in "series". I think that one of the ways of making things interesting is through diversity: the styles as well as the techniques are varied. It can be the animal world [The Animals], societal criticism [Human Behaviour], comic strip-like drawing [Mr Doggy], crazy images as if from a dream or nightmare [Short Stories], gentle melancholy [Sky Blue] or, based on my own experience, phantasmagorical worlds in a dazzling frenzy [Viva La Vida]. I am currently working on the latter series. These series are very different from each other. What interests me are the variations in energy that they imply for me. So I go from one thing to another like one goes through experiences. This is often what happens in art in general and in life in particular.
