Hotel Castle Town Painting

Castle Town is a deserted mining town in Montana. For almost 100 years it has been left to decay and is rarely visited. At its height 1,500 people lived there including Calamity Jane who was trying to escape her reputation in Deadwood. This watercolor was inspired by a visit in Fall 2019. The town has no road through it now, so to visit you have to climb a hill from the mud track. On the day I was there it was snowing and my only link back to the track was my footprints in the snow. Then it began to snow more heavily and I felt quite vulnerable and isolated. My aim was to capture this sense of desolation and isolation.
