I draw inspiration from my experiences and memories of the natural world - where the land meets the sea, the wilderness of mountains, the intimacy of a garden. From these moments and memories I paint to create work that has a sense of time unfolding, where nothing is static but forever in a state of becoming and where a sense of permanence and impermanence is implied. I enjoy working on paper because of its mutable properties, its fragility, impermanence and ability to absorb watercolour and inks that become embedded into its structure rather than lie on its surface. I work directly and intuitively exploring and exploiting the intrinsic qualities of these media, their fluidity, transparency and opacity. Forms and shapes dance to find their own rhythm, sometimes dissolving into a space whilst others are interrupted by a line, mark or form. These processes are orchestrated until they become an image that evokes my emotional response to a particular experience of a time / event I work on several paintings simultaneously letting each painting evolve to find its own identity, somewhere between abstraction and figuration. I work in series often re-visiting themes.

The focus of my practice is rooted in my experiences and response to my surroundings. Whilst living in London it was the urban environment that provided source material for me to excavate and develop but since moving to Wales, 29 years ago, the focus of my attention has shifted from the urban to the natural landscape. I work in series, very often repeating the same motif but in different configurations and scale. Just as my focus of inspiration lies at the edges of the air, land and sea, my creative practice lies in the area between the intentional and incidental. Working at these edges demands a mind-full awareness and presence that embodies my experiences of the world. Over recent years I have been exploring a broader, fresher colour palette using gardens and botanic references as my inspiration to create work that celebrates life with the intention of being joyful and up-lifting.
