I'Ching #1 Painting

I'Ching (Yijing) An ancient manuscript passed down since Zhou Dynasty (1000-750 BC), the I'Ching has always meant something unique to different groups of people. Commoners, past till present, have superstitiously taken the I'Ching as a book of divination. To ancient imperial rulers, it was a document which facilitated their control of the people. To their generals, it was their strategic guide in warfare that pre dated The Art of War by Sun Tzu. To scholars, it is about philosophy, culture, psychology and history of the Chinese race. Although scholars believe that a Chinese without the understanding of the I'Ching is like a Christian without the knowledge of the bible, most Chinese today have little clue what the I'Ching is truly about. The many legends and mysteries surrounding the manuscript have not helped the lay persons in understanding the true value of the I'Ching. The first step in learning about the I'Ching is to decode the Bagua (roughly translated as the eight divination signs with the yin and yang symbol in the centre). Legend has it that the Bagua was created by Fuxi who lived in prehistoric times before the advent of farming to assist hunters and gatherers in predicting the weather. The Bagua hence came thousands of years before the creation of writing. In fact, scholars believe that the divination signs were the source for various Chinese characters. The eight divination signs are based on eight occurrences or phenomena in nature namely sky, wind, water, mountain, earth, thunder, fire and lake. The eight divination signs and natural phenomena form the basis of the I'Ching series, as sets of eight paintings are made. Each natural phenomenon will be represented by a main colour that captures its essence, e.g. light blue to describe sky and red to symbolize fire. The divination sign that describes the particular natural phenomenon will be placed throughout the painting randomly. These steps will result in the formation of an abstract piece. This particular work is a set of 8 paintings (each 50 cm by 50 cm).
