About The Artwork

In my practice, I like to experiment with different mediums, styles, and techniques and I take a reactionist approach which challenges my to react intuitively at each step in the process. Sometimes that leads to a variety of layers work where many previous layers are completely covered, such as is the case with this work. It is those layers, however hidden, that have helped the shape the texture of this work. The variation of colours and marks at the centre of the piece is offset by the two corner colour blocks, which act like a frame to the chaotic centre. There is balance, but also tension. My struggle is always to find this "sweet spot." Naming is a process that I usually leave until the end, and this painting made me think of magic, rainbows, and, obviously, unicorns. Since I made the work, and unicorns are not supposed be real, I decided that I must have been a secret unicorn. I like to think that artists can have a bit of a sense of humour.

BIO (1994 - ) Shelby Dawn Smith is an artist who grew up in small town Northwestern Ontario, and currently conducts her practice in Kenora, Ontario. She graduated with honours from the Bachelor of Fine Arts program at the University of Ottawa in 2015. It wasn’t until the final years of her BFA that she began exploring abstraction, after discovering the art of other abstractionists, like Fiona Rae and Cy Twombly. Shelby’s expressive mixed-media paintings explore the complexities of emotion through visual elements, such as colour and texture, and attempt to find a balance between harmony and tension. Her debut solo show, Different Every Time, took place in the spring of 2016 at Studio Sixty-Six and showcased her experimental and process-based style. In the spring of 2019, Shelby was announced as the Programmer for Kenora’s new Art Centre.
