In thermal updrafts soaring on eloquence and elaborate exploits. Life rendered me broken. I thought I was free - until severed wings saved me. I knew You were there. Swallows returned to see if I would venture out. They swooped and dashed back and forth. I flaunted my freedom for a love that was lost. You were there. I fell helplessly, grabbing at the shafts of light that beckoned. Grasping for One who could save me. A splinter piercing my hand. You understand. Hold tight, these shadows will pass. Dank surrounds me. There You find me. My bed in the abyss. Let me die here. You wait for me. Fear surrounds me, darkness overshadows me. Here in the umbra, I feel you. Under the silhouette of nightmares set free - cold as ice I lay. Void of identity, emptied of self. You are there. Transcendent Truth and Light have penetrated me. Curled around a glimmer of hope, my heart clasps tightly to the peace. You watch over me. This abyss. I am not alone. Silence, like the leaves of my past, will not encase me. No oracle will veil Your radiance. Height and depth echo Your existence. My fall will not cast my rise. I will find my voice and this winter’s nest will release me. My aestivation will bloom again under the warmth of Your gaze. I will soar again, find me where You are. Ps139 Written by Kim Brown The Swallows The symbolism of a swallow bird exists for a long time ago. In the past, it was believed that a swallow symbolizes God. The swallow is usually associated with love, loyalty, and peace. The Fox The fox is viewed as a guide down a destined path. In this painting, I have used it as a symbol for the Spirit of God. These beautiful animals are found all over the world and have been part of ancient folklore and traditions for thousands of years. The fox reveals itself during times of great and unpredictable change and symbolizes mental responsiveness. He implores you to break free from your comfort zone and remain flexible, to allow you to see through deception and discern right from wrong. The fox (Holy Spirit) will gently warn you when trouble is nearby. Foxes represent quiet observation, listening, patience, and calculated risk-taking. The most stand-out feature of a fox is its bright fur coat and bushy tail. The fur is its most important protective tool, offering camouflage as well as giving comfort when it is cold and rainy. This represents God's protection in all circumstances. Foxes are visionaries, knowing the outcome that they want to achieve first, then carefully observing, waiting, and taking small steps to finally get to their end goal. The fox is here to encourage you to dream big, again.

My aim to make art that not only tells my story, but all our stories. To speak to the abused, the down-trodden, the hopeless, the lost, the lonely, the shamed, the orphan, the abandoned. My work is characterized by contrasts – the juxtaposition of light and dark on several levels – which is recognized throughout my paintings. Fine detail, drawn lines, and meticulously painted shapes clash with bold brushstrokes, spatters and blurred and melted colors. Leonie.e.Brown has a degree in Fine Arts and diploma in teaching and studied Fine Art in Potchefstroom. She was one of the early winners of the Volkskas (now ABSA) Atelier, and today lives and works Cape Town. She has been exhibiting and selling since 2004. Passionate about painting and experimenting with Encaustics, she focuses her work on the relationship between the human spirit, faith, touch, and daily life. About the Style: The brightness of oils are mixed with the soft translucency of encaustics (wax) and creates hidden messages and layers below. The layering gives the work a softness and richness that invites the viewer to look closer and to experience the satin-smooth surface through touch. The wax layers get more and more translucent through the warmth emanating from the exploring human hand. The viewer becomes a part of the slow change and clarity of the painting…as if the message is rising from the depth of the hidden soul to the surface of the mind. There is a strange ethereal beauty to these paintings as if made from air. It is important that the viewer is part of the process. Time blurs and heals our wounds. Like About Encaustics: The term Encaustica is derived from Greek, meaning burning in. Encaustic art has soft, smokey and sensual feel about it and is a spontaneous medium where hot or cold wax is used, to which colored pigments have been added. The liquid/paste is then applied to a surface and the various layers are melted and burned into each other. It is typically layered to create more opaque, or more translucent effects, and can be combined with other materials. Each layer of wax can also be scraped, textured or polished for a variety of finishes. The possibilities are endless—encaustic paintings can be abstract or realistic, subtle or bold—and the wax itself is enormously sensual. It’s really all about incorporating your own style into this wonderful medium.
