These began as ink and watercolor journal entries while spending a very healing time in St. John, USVI and Long Island, Bahamas. I could not stop making them when I got home and they’ve developed to become more textured and layered. Included to the process now are gold/copper leaf, rice paper, resin on a 5x7/4x6 hardboard. Some are made individually, others in small groups and the larger pieces are mounted to an unstretched canvas. After two years of delving deep in political expression with my work, I welcomed the playfulness of these patinated pieces. "Four More Too" is a 20x22 composition crafted using ink, watercolor, copper and gold leaf, rice paper, and resin on chipboard. The piece features six vertical rectangular panels, each with a textured surface and chipped edges, evoking a sense of reclaimed or distressed materials. The panels are predominantly white, interspersed with pastel hues and rust-like discolorations, giving an impression of age and patina. Each panel contains a single circular motif, located near the top, in shades of greenish-blue. These circles vary slightly in size and color intensity, creating subtle differences within the repetitive structure. From these circles, vertical lines extend downward, characterized by their uneven lengths and predominantly dark tones, contrasting sharply with the lighter backgrounds. The artwork juxtaposes natural decay with industrial repetition, creating a minimalist and contemplative atmosphere. The visual interplay between uniformity and uniqueness in each segment invites the viewer to explore the nuanced distinctions amid the structured composition.

A self-taught artist from Paterson, NJ, Alfonse Pagano was an assistant to Len Lye in the 1970s before attending The School of Visual Arts and the New School in NYC. His work has been shown at numerous galleries and The Laguna Gloria Art Museum in Austin, Texas, and is held in various collections at The Carnegie Mellon Museum in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In 1990 Alfonse Pagano took up photography and co-authored a photojournalism book entitled DREADS. With an introduction from Alice Walker, the book published in 1999 by Artisan/Workman Press is in its eighth printing. A move from NYC to Newark, NJ in 2011 inadvertently led to the development of a new technique forging both disciplines of painting and photography. At the height of COVID, Alfonse and his partner Rowena bought a 40-foot trawler and are presently cruising in the tropics trying like hell to figure out how to make art on a boat.
