Natural materials: earth & mineral pigments, coffee and amber shellac (natural binder). Artwork is signed (also on the back of the canvas). About | "Icarus" is a painting that symbolises many things I have experienced in my life and gathered on my way of exploration and experimentation in art. It is a personal motif, although its origins come from Greek mythology and the story of a son who flew too close to the sun. Some people who saw the painting at the exhibition said that Icarus is laying down, but that's not actually true. And this is ― the difference ― that I made. He has risen from the ashes and is 'running' towards new beginnings ... The art style that I used is a technique that I've been exploring for many years. It comes from the legacy of 'abstract expressionists', especially the great painter Jackson Pollock. When I paint I mostly don't even touch the surface of the canvas, I'm just dripping the paint trough hundreds of layers. The illusion of the relief structure is one of the consequences of multilayered surface. It was really important that I used only 'natural materials', because of the archaic and primal look that I had associated with Icarus. The underpainting was made with coffee and then I used high quality earth & mineral pigments combined with amber shellac to complete the painting; it is an antique technique and is nowadays often used by art restorers. The painting has rough uncorrected edges and is very resistant.

Andrej Mratinković was born in 1984 in a town Celje in Slovenia. He graduated at the Department of Fine Arts at University of Maribor in 2011. When he decided to study fine art, he quickly came to realize that his work will also be to deeply analyze all the components that will give him an artwork that he truly strive for; and for that he would need a lot of exploration, experimentation and experience. A turning point in his artistic development was the discovery of artworks by sculptor Mirsad Begić, who inspired him with his incredible work, personal mythology and introduced him to natural materials, especially "coffee". Mratinković's main fields of creativity are drawing, painting, small sculptures, digital art and graphic design. His art work is often linked with concepts like: imagination, primacy, archaism, mysteriousness, mysticism and poetics. /// Contact: amratinkovicdesign@gmail.com
