About The Artwork

While strolling through a small graveyard near my house I stumbled upon the tombstone of Mary 'Perdita' Robinson, an 18th century celebrity, actress, novelist and poet. After reading up on her fascinating and somewhat tragic life, I began a painting based on the tombstone and two famous portraits of the actress: one by Gainsborough in the Wallace Collection and the other by Reynolds at the National Gallery. However, my painting also doubles up as a portrait of one of my closest friends, Imogen. I chose my most quintessentially English friend to pose as Mary Robinson playing the role of 'Perdita' from Shakespeare's 'The Winter's Tale' (the role which Mary Robinson was best known for). The text on the hat and dress was transferred onto the painting from rubbings I made of the poems on Mary Robinson's tombstone. The poem, about death, was written by Robinson herself.
