​TRINE CHURCHILL, Danish-born and raised, now lives and works in Los Angeles, California. The daughter of a Danish cartoonist and from a family of dreamers, art and imagination was part of growing up. “I FIND INSPIRATION in the everyday life. Attuned to my physical world, I take a lot of pictures with my phone. The images can be somewhat mundane to begin with, but used as a mere stepping stone into the process of making a painting, my physical world becomes more of a psychological, and symbolic one. I often refer to my paintings as dreamscapes, and moments stopped in time. I approach the canvas with minimal planning, or knowing of the steps ahead. In this way, I allow for mistakes to happen, aware that these mistakes can sometimes take the painting to the next level. My painting process also entails loose handling of the paint in areas that are pure abstractions along with other areas that are more rendered and realistic. It is this duality in the painting that I feel very passionate about finding a real pleasure in applying the paint to the surface. For this purpose I work in oil as well as acrylics, both of which medium will allow for flow in the moment.” TRINE CHURCHILL received her BFA from Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angles and studied for a semester at l’ensba in Paris. This introduced her to the French impressionist painters with frequent visits to museums like Musee d’Orsay and l’Orangerie. Recent trips to Paris have renewed this inspiration taking in the brush work of these artists. Earlier sources of influence came from the surrealists such as Magritte and Dali, and the Norwegian expressionist Edvard Munch, and of current and contemporary artists Churchill looks to Peter Doig and Hernan Bas, finding inspiration in their use of the abstract with the representational. IN 2015 Trine Churchill started a blog called THE WEEKLY. Here she sends out a watercolor / color pencil drawing once a week to her email followers. The drawing is of something current, either a current event or currently on the artist’s mind. Along with the drawing she writes about what the image means to her. CURATOR and organizer of Art & Home, a fundraiser hosted by Room & Board in Culver City, Churchill invites each year over 100 artists from the Los Angeles art community to exhibit their work in support of LA Family Housing, an non-profit organization helping the homeless population get into permanent housing.
