ABOUT THE ARTWORK

From a series of work inspired by visits to traditional denim mills in Japan and Italy. The industrial metallic sounds and aged factory buildings, the vats of deep indigo dye and raw cotton fabric. All coming together to create swathes of virginal raw denim, ready to begin its life and earn a patina. Mixed media on wood panel / Protected with satin varnish / Signed and dated on reverse.

I began my art career in the early '00s working under the name Six04. Creating large format graphic driven pieces and receiving multiple commissions for commercial and private collections. As well as regularly exhibiting in London, Amsterdam, Barcelona. After relocated to Sydney I continued working, notably on the ‘Urban Exploration Exhibition' supported by Stussy. I returned to the UK to co-found a boutique creative agency. Working with brands such as Conde Nast, Nike, Levis, and Paul Smith on award-winning branding and campaign creative. Continuing to paint and exhibit during this period helped balance the commercial limitations of agency life. Over time my work has evolved into abstract expressionism and modern landscapes. But with a graphic foundation influenced by designers such as Peter Saville and David Carson. My years of art direction experience are reflected in the awareness of the marks and composition in my work. Painting, like my other passions of surfing and mediation, are all practices that require you to be in the moment. When I’m working no other thoughts or distractions are present. Only the marks that are being made are real and important at that moment in time. The images, colours, and shapes formed during deep mediations or time in the sea often return and find themselves on the work. Although not figurative landscapes my work is also influenced by the light and terrain of the South Downs. Being fortunate to have my main studio near by.
