About The Artwork

From the series 'The Map and the Territory'. "What today is the meaning of foreign, the meaning of homeland? When the homeland becomes foreign, the foreign becomes the homeland.” – Thomas Mann Maps, borders, immigration, and refugees—topics pertinent to our world’s geopolitical climate—have been of interest to me, as a member of a family with a complex historical narrative, and having redefined ‘homeland’ periodically over the course of my life. In this series of paintings, I explore the idea of ‘territory’ as represented by maps, alongside images of abandoned homes, to express my perception of a collective reality that influences us all, one of conflict and man-made destruction. The paintings seek to portray the experience of migration, and parallel my own external and internal journeys. I employ recognizable, symbolic motifs, alongside fragmented narratives: ruined homes, embodying empty and lost spaces, that represent our need to belong somewhere, physically and emotionally; abstract landscapes, evoking a void, an absence of ‘place’ we strive to fill; and maps, topographic symbols of ‘place,’ which illustrate the experience of migration as echoed by Jacqueline Carey: “All exiles carry a map within them that points the way homeward”.

Irit Epstein studied fine arts for five years at the Academy of Art (HDK) in Berlin, Germany, receiving a Masters of Fine Arts. Additionally, she completed a masters degree in Art Therapy at New York University. Irit relocated to Toronto from Israel in 2010. Since that time she has exhibited her work in numerous solo and group exhibitions at galleries in the Toronto area including the Arts and Letters club of Toronto, Gallery 1313, Articsok, Bezpala-Brown, Glenhyrst Art Gallery of Brant, Arta, The Papermill, Doris McCarthy Gallery, the Miles Nadal JCC, and others. She was the jury award winner for the February, 2012 "LastIn" exhibition at Bezpala-Brown Gallery. Irit also was the Juror's Choice in the "Back to Basics" exhibition at Doris McCarthy Gallery. In 2016, she exhibited in a group exhibition at Agora Gallery in New York City. Prior to her move to Canada, Irit's work appeared in six solo exhibitions in Israel. She participated in the group traveling exhibition "Contenedores De Espiritu" in Mexico. Additionally, her work was exhibited at the Biennale Internazionale Dell'Arte Contemporanea in Florence, Italy, as well as numerous group exhibitions in Israel and Germany. Her work appears in private collections in Israel, Germany, England, Belgium, the Netherlands, USA, and Canada. Irit's paintings are a personal diary and a reflection of a continuing journey within herself, carrying on a dialogue with the environment and responding through symbolic imagery. This visual exploration reflects the constant interaction between universal elements and personal symbols, allowing a reflective look at their complicated co-existence. Diving into her internal landscapes, Irit retrieves images and combines them with external impressions to create a space, an experience, and an atmosphere to arouse the curiosity and imagination of the viewer.
