Paintings depicting beetles are often filled with symbolism and hidden meanings. In various cultures, beetles have been associated with different interpretations, ranging from mysterious and dark to life-affirming. For instance, if we take the image of the scarab, popular in ancient Egypt, this beetle symbolized rebirth, immortality, and life cycles. It was depicted as a creature rolling the solar disk across the sky, representing constant renewal and the rising of the sun. In modern paintings, the scarab can also symbolize transformation or rebirth. On the other hand, if darker beetles like rhinoceros beetles or cockroaches are depicted, they may represent themes of decay, destruction, or suppressed fear. The painting might show them in shadow or surrounded by gloomy elements, pointing to processes of decomposition and the inevitability of death. Beetles can also symbolize adaptability and resilience. These insects thrive in almost any environment, so their image can be associated with survival and the ability to adapt. Each detail in the painting can carry its own meaning: the texture and color of the beetles, their placement on the canvas, and their interaction with other elements. All of this helps to reveal the central idea of the artwork through the imagery of these insects.
