About The Artwork

This painting is from the series where I'm exploring ink drawing combined with watercolor painting. I painted it while I was at the artist residency in the Istria region in Slovenia in a picturesque ancient town called Kubed. The residency was surrounded by an amazing garden, cared for by a friendly couple who invited me to spend time at their garden even when they were not present to take it as an inspiration. I indeed got inspired by the rich floral life there. The center of the attention is a couple of Irises, which have got their name in ancient Greece from the goddess of rainbow. Was the fact that the whole month of my staying at the residency I've seen many glorious rainbows there only a coincidence... I took the canvas to the garden during the day, to catch the shadows of the plants on it or to observe some plants (Irises for instance) and draw them with Inkpen on the canvas. Later (when the sun became too hot) I took it to my studio and started to add colors. I've chosen this method to stay connected to the natural elements such as sunlight and living plants, to try to catch their essence in a different manner. I wanted the experience itself to become part of the painting.

Anamari Hrup is the art and program manager of the interdisciplinary project Abandoned Plants Sanctuary. Together with Eva Jera Hanžek, she has been leading the project and creating workshops, events, exhibitions, and domestic and international collaborations in the Green Refuge mobile greenhouse at Krater creative laboratory in the Bezigrad district of Ljubljana. Her body of work covers the field of painting, drawing, and illustration, combining ecological guidelines and themes, which are already implemented in the project Abandoned Plants Sanctuary. In her works, she develops and upgrades them into a whole, in the mediums of paintings, drawings, and illustration. In her personal work, through an intimate and personal relationship with the above media, she explores the field between individual and collective, between formal techniques and informal approaches. In her work, she subtly incorporates current social events, the center of which is her attitude towards nature, sustainable way of living, and the position of the individual in current socio-ecological circumstances.
