This painting is constructed in terms of antithetical images and concepts- land vs. sea, living creatures, vs. machines, protected vs. vulnerable, amusement vs war, childhood vs adult. My years working as a theme park designer and studying oceanography are definite influences here.

Cory Sewelson is a Los Angeles native who currently works and resides in Altadena, California. He earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from California State University, Northridge in 1977. Outside of his art studies and practice, there have been some other strong influences that have affected the conceptual direction of Sewelson’s work. His earlier education in biology along with a “day” job designing theme parks and animal habitats, as well as a life-long love of the outdoors have all contributed to shaping the content and focus of his paintings. Sewelson’s work explores our relationship to nature through the built world of our architecture. Sewelson has shown extensively here in the U.S as well as in Italy and France. His work is held in both corporate and private collections as well.
