About The Artwork

Ishoko is a traditional dance of the hunters peculiar to the Etsako people of Edo State, Nigeria. This dance is a performance of a highly respect people in the Community and to be a member of the group you have to be a great hunter and you must have killed a simulated wild animal, thats when you will be recognised has a hunter and to qualify to be a member of the group. They make use special traditional drums for this dance and the drums are made of snake skin and a traditional native ceramics pot which gives the drum a special sound. This painting was inspired by the passion of the drummer has he was using the drum to send out massages. I witness their performance during my childhood growing up in the village but I saw it in another dimension in the 2011 beyond what I was used to growing up in the village thats is why I decide to do this painting. I tried as much as possible to put the feelings and passion of the drummer into this work of art and I hope its viewers will feel the same way I do, give viewers the feeling of physical present in the Ishoko dance performance. Colours used are be used symbolically in this painting to help portray what stands to represent, also to give it a festivals mood. Yellow is be used proficiently to symbolise the raising sun the celebration of a new season full of aspiration and hope, the brighter side of life. While green stands for growth, the purple represents the hierarchy and the blue stand for the piece and rest that will comes when all human effect has be fulfilled. Oil on canvas is the best way for me to express my feelings and the subject matter is way for me to say something about the way of life and the cultural tradition of a people the best way I can. While the style is impressionist because I always like to capture the essence of my painting.
