Hajime Okubo: A Life in Art Early Life and Education Hajime Okubo was born in 1943, in a world that was still reeling from the aftermath of World War II. He graduated from Shonan High School, where his passion for art began to take shape. Early exposure to various artistic expressions inspired him to pursue a life dedicated to creativity and artistic exploration. Exhibition History Okubo's artistic journey began to flourish in the late 1970s when he held his first significant exhibition at the Humboldt Gallery in San Francisco in 1977. This marked the start of his professional career as an artist. The following years saw his work gain recognition, as he exhibited at the A.B. Condon Gallery in Soho, New York City, from 1979 to 1981. This period was crucial for Okubo, as he immersed himself in the vibrant art scene of NYC, further refining his artistic voice. In 1988, he was invited to participate in the Long Island Artists Exhibition, featuring nine distinguished artists. That same year, he showcased his work at the Nassau County Museum of Fine Art in Roslyn, Long Island, where his art was celebrated for its depth and creativity. His contributions to the art community continued with an exhibition at the Port Washington Library Gallery in 1990, further solidifying his presence in the New York art scene. From 1993 to 1998, Okubo embarked on a transformative journey, studying the works of the old masters through visits to Europe and Asia. This period of learning not only enriched his artistic skills but also deepened his understanding of art history and its influences on contemporary practice. Since 1999, Okubo has been actively involved in numerous group shows in Honolulu, Hawaii. His work has resonated with audiences across various venues, showcasing his adaptability and growth as an artist. Collections and Recognition Hajime Okubo's artwork has been featured in esteemed collections, highlighting his significance in the art world. His pieces are showcased in the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Oakland Museum of Art, among others. The Humboldt Gallery of San Francisco and the A.B. Condon Gallery in New York also exhibit his work, underscoring the impact he has made in both cities. Additionally, his art has found a place in private collections, including those of Dr. and Mrs. V. Richards from Stanford University, and Dr. K. Homma, an animal clinic in Japan.
