Indiana is known for its vibrant jazz scene, which perhaps originates from the Gennett Records recording studio in Richmond, Indiana. Gennett flourished in the 1920s producing the earliest recordings of Bix Beiderbecke and the Wolverines, early recordings of jazz greats from Louis Armstrong to Bing Crosby, to the original 1929 recording of Hoagy Carmichael’s “Stardust.” Hoagy wrote “Stardust” in his hometown Bloomington, Indiana. Cole Porter was born and grew up in Indiana, and several jazz icons such as Wes Montgomery, Slide Hampton, and David Baker are from Indiana.
