About The Artwork

When Portsmouth football club won the 2008 FA Cup I wanted to celebrate like everybody else in the city but in my own way as an artist. At the time I'd seen pictures of this crazy supporter but didn't know who he was. I subsequently found out he was an antiques book dealer based in Petersfield and he had changed his name by deed poll to John Portsmouth Football Club Westwood. Equating this character to antique dealing was conflicting and at the same time intriguing. I went to his bookshop introduced myself and John was wonderfully accommodating. We did three sittings during which I came to understand that Westwood’s tattoos and costume were not simply an attention-seeking display but a way of externalising his deep passion for Portsmouth FC and reflecting his inner self. It was quite fascinating the depth to which John's identify is tied up with the club. The painting has been exhibited at the National Portrait Gallery, London as part of the BP Awards 2009 is featured in the book 500 portraits: BP Portrait Award by Sandy Nairn. It was also exhibited as part of the Parker Harris, Football Art Prize, Rochdale, Touchstones; Sheffield Millennium Gallery and Sunderland Museum and City Gardens, March 2022 - 2023.
