This a portrait of my brother at age 19 on stage at Max's Kansas City in 1977 the virtual heart and sould of the the Punk Rock era. As such it is both a very personal expression and at once emblematic of an exciting and unstable moment in bth our lives as well as the city. Everything was unknown to us and the city which was in veritable free-fall. A fucking great time and the complete opposite of the horrificly sterile time in which we find ourselves today. It was risky but no where near as dangerous as now. AIDS had not hit, it was sex, drugs and rock n roll, blissfully innocent if decadent, Still promising unlike the oppessive suffocation of today in the tortured, dying hulk of the city. Peopl could still revel in being different and feel independent, creative. Today, the young are feverishly afraid and mad to embrace any group enforcement put in their path (on their phone, on which they no longer talk). Freedom has been replaced with compulsion. It was rough and it was better.
