About The Artwork

The city where Judith lives is called Betulia, and one day was attacked by the troops of the Assyrians, led by Holofernes. Judith is a young Jewish widow who wants to do something to protect the place where she lives. The troops of the city are unable to compete with those of Holofernes, and then the girl decides to play cunning and devises a plan. One night, accompanied by a trusted handmaid, she ventures into the Assyrian general's tent, and the latter, in front of the woman's beauty, Holofern thinks he can seduce her, and so he lowers his defense and begins to drink, getting drunk. Having drunk too much, he ends up falling asleep and here is the perfect occasion in which it happens with Judith who cuts off the head of Holofernes. There is a strange determination that animates Giuditta, then there is the fear drawn on the face of Holofernes and the anger of the handmaid who seems to spur the young heroine, giving her the courage she needs to make this crazy act.
