(Kan)Ye West, rapper and inimitable genius. An inescapable presence in the media due to his odd behavior, which leads you to wonder, what is this guy doing? Seemingly 100% himself, but how much of that is just his smart way of dealing with the spotlight that is always pointed straight at him? His hand holds the classic gesture often featured in paintings of Christ. With a tiny little change it forms the crossed fingers, symbol of a false promise. A little lie, a twisted truth. Or does is symbolize a wish for succes and luck? It is in that dual meaning that Kanye finds himself. His bi-polar disorder is enlarged by the media, every moment captured and shown. Is he in control, or is it some force he doesn’t quite understand himself that takes over? His unconventional behavior raises questions. Genius or loony? Melt-down or Turn-up? Does he mean everything he says, or is it all just a smart move? --- This painting is part of the Apostles series. This series of paintings titled ‘Apostles’ combines history with contemporary portraits. Religious works from art history are used as a starting point to inform the rest of the painting. Through color, shape and subject they are brought into current day. It shows a reflection of some of the driving forced behind society, and how that relates to our past. The body of work asks the question: How human are today’s gods?

Mathijs Vissers (1989, The Netherlands) is a Dutch artist who works with both traditional, digital media and the crossroads between them. The society we build for ourselves changes us as human beings. In a rapid pace we develop, but every step forward also has an effect on mankind as a whole. It’s these effects that interest me and form the starting point for what I do. My work is a reflection of aspects of society that influence our behavior. Through narrative series of paintings I aim to tell these stories that either have shaped, will shape or are shaping us right now. Through the combination of bold color and contemporary subjects I try to get the viewer to reflect on themselves and society as a whole.
