About The Artwork

Back Story. Visiting friend. Mutual arrives. Look what I've bought, she says. Takes out plant in pot. Do you like it? Oh, I say, it's an Aspidistra. Me remembering jardinières from a most distant youth. She looks at me quizzically. Keep the Aspidistra Flying, I say. She looks even more quizzically. Orwell says I. 1984? Earlier book? She had heard of Orwell but nothing more. I retrieved plant. To add to the scene I discovered it was a plastic replica. Orwell's book is a sarcastic savagery upon British middle-class, and wannabees. Attitudes of those who used to have Aspidistra in their main windows. With this plastic specimen, ignorance and class aspiration of purchaser I felt all that Orwell must have felt. Quite overwhelmed me in a fraction of a second. Thus an Aspidistra, tongue-in-cheek, offered for sale. Usual high-quality canvas and fine-art materials.

Lowborn, lacking Luxury Beliefs, but not inverted snob. Orphaned, outcast, male, straight, white, capitalist (a tiny fish in a very big pond), quite conservative in fiscal and social matters. In long term and friendly relationship. Purposely irrelevant prankster, yet pragmatic, singular, evolved, authentic, ironic, sardonic, sceptical. I realise some of these classifications could go against one. Definitely not intersected. Comparatively deprived early life, which has had life-long permanent effect. Not least in being grateful, for what I've got. And for any opportunities that I can both recognise and take. These themes within some of my works. Never faked a sarcasm too. Personally loyal to those who have tried or helped me. What else is a man of honour to do? Really enjoy painting, sometimes. In silence, without media lies etc., have noticed sound of my own breathing as I paint. Most expressive, rather than regular. Still learning after all these years. Still learning. Thank you for your interest.
