Cornelis Van Houte

Cornelis Van Houte

Congo Democratic Republic

Cornelis van Houte, Doctor of Laws and former Navy servicemember, callsign Frost, vanished from the world he once knew, leaving only scorn. In harsher lands, he moved with a shadow PMC across Africa and Eastern Europe, serving silent masters and performing unspoken deeds. Today, he channels that past into art. Van Houte’s work explores the tension between memory, place, and emotion. His canvases are not literal representations—they are invitations to perceive, remember, and feel. Color, light, and atmosphere evoke experiences deeper than any photograph or description. Rooted in neo-Impressionism and inspired by the Leningrad school, his style balances realism and abstraction, allowing brush, pigment, and vision to meet where form dissolves into emotion. In his new Murmansk–Kinshasa series, icy northern light meets the heat and vibrancy of the Congo, exploring distance and connection, separation and unity, memory and transformation. Van Houte paints directly and expressively, building atmosphere rather than scene. Each stroke asks the viewer to slow down, to sense the invisible threads connecting continents, climates, and memories. The Murmansk–Kinshasa series is a bold statement of contrasts revealing unexpected harmony. Each painting becomes a poetic moment, whether as the centerpiece of a room or a quiet companion in reflection. Van Houte’s work invites viewers into story, atmosphere, and memory, transforming color and light into a dialogue between human experience and the landscapes that shape it.
